Posture correctors are wearable devices designed to improve posture by providing support or reminders to align the body correctly. How Posture Correctors Work  

All posture correctors have in common that they are designed to address muscle imbalances that arise when we spend long periods in unhealthy, fixed positions. While the muscles in the front of the chest (pectorals) tend to become tight, the muscles in the upper back, including the middle trap and rhomboids, are likely to become overstretched. Correctors can help activate the muscles that haven't worked enough and guide them to where they need to be. This is called proprioception, where the body gets sensory feedback to feel where it's supposed to be in space. 

Proprioception helps you maneuver freely without having to stop to think about every move. It enables you to touch your finger to your nose with your eyes closed, walk down a flight of stairs without looking at every step, or sit in a chair without looking under your rear end. Correctors allow us to build on our proprioceptive senses, giving us a keener awareness of what good posture feels like and what we need to do to achieve it. "If I start to slouch, the posture corrector will let me know I'm in the wrong position so I can pull my shoulders back or tuck my lower back in," Rodriguez says. Ideally, this correction will become second nature. 

How Posture Correctors Help  

"There is no one size fits all for posture advice," Heather Ippolito, Alexander Technique teacher and Posture Coach, explained. "A common instruction for someone to give if they are trying to help with posture is [to] pull your shoulders back. I see many clients who have been trying to do just that but nothing is getting better." That's where a posture corrector can help. When the shoulders are retracted, a posture corrector brings your neck into better alignment. This decreases the forward head position, which can cause the shoulders to round down. 

This is important because now you can move your neck into a more fantastic range of motion with more stability than if your shoulders were not retracted. She advises anyone with scoliosis or severe back pain to seek a medical professional before wearing a posture corrector.

It is also more challenging to put on than other posture correctors we tested. (If you don't read the instructions, you may be confused about how to wear it.) Overall, this posture corrector is an excellent option for those looking for a product to wear while sitting at a desk or lounging on the couch.

This model isn't the ideal option for everyone. We noticed during testing that this posture corrector did a good job of aligning our shoulders but was less effective at aligning posture overall. The Gaiam Neoprene Posture Corrector is lightweight and practical if shoulder posture is your focus.

We were impressed with this product's high level of comfort, which slips onto the shoulders with minimal fabric on the back for extra breathability and minimal back sweating. The material is soft and breathable and not restricting in any way. Available in just one size, this product adjusts to fit chest sizes from 30 to 43 inches. The product’s slim design can be worn under many kinds of clothing without detection. The minimalist design was easy for us to slip on and adjust to our body, but we noted that the relative lack of structure this posture corrector provides might not work well for those whose posture demands more correction. Besides pulling our shoulders back, it didn't feel like this posture corrector did much else. But this product might be a winner for those who desire comfort and light shoulder support.

1. Self-Correction: Your Best Bet for Better Posture

Tighten the core and relax the neck and shoulders. Tuck in the chin and lift the upper back, keeping the lower back, pelvis, and feet on the floor. Hold this posture for a few moments.
